Veep launches book on culture

The Vice President, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has launched a book titled “African Culture in Governance and Development: the Ghana Paradigm.”

Authored by the Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area, in the Western Region, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the 864- page book is forwarded by the Omanhene of Asante Asokore, Nana Susubiribi Krobea Asante.

In the book, the writer attributes the challenges faced by the African continents to the neglect of African values and adoption of foreign way of governance.

It also talks about the struggle the African continent will continue to face, if the leaders do not part ways with the foreign system of culture and governance.

Mr Amissah-Arthur described the book as insightful and thought-provoking, recommending it as a must-read for students in the tertiary institutions.

The event was attended by high profile personalities including the Minister of Education, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and the President of the National House of Chiefs, Nana Professor John Nabilla.

The first 10 copies of the book were auctioned for GHc 41,200 with the first copy being bought at the cost of GHc 15,000.

Mr Amissah-Arthur commended the author of the book and urged other African writers to continue to use their pen to effect the needed change on the African continent.

Reviewing the book, a retired professor of History at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Divine Edem Kobla Amenumey, said the book called for a total new model of governance because the current foreign model adopted by “our leaders had failed to transform the African continents”.

He said the book centered on how the foreign culture had failed to be fruitful and productive to the African continent and raised issues with foreign culture of governance which did not relate and originate from the African root and, therefore, could not be useful to the African people.

The author of the book, according to Prof. Amenumey, calls on African leaders to look within instead of relying on foreign model of governance in order to deal with the fundamental challenges obstructing the advancement of the continents.

The President of the National House of Chiefs, Prof. John Nabilla, underscored the need for the African continent to continue to re-examine itself, since it was the only way for the continents to fully embrace the pattern set by its ancestors.

He, particularly, mentioned the area of chieftaincy which he said needed to be fully looked into else “we lose our relevance in effecting the needed change in our continents”.
