The University of Ghana Debate Society is set to represent Ghana at the 2027 World Universities Debate Championship (WUDC) in Ottawa, Canada, after securing qualification through its performance at the continental level.
The championship is scheduled to take place from December 27, 2026, to January 4, 2027, bringing together university debaters from across the world.
The University of Ghana team earned the opportunity after winning the 2025 Pan-African Universities Debate Championship in South Africa in December 2025.
The continental title has provided the team with an opportunity to compete on the global stage, where it will face university debaters from different countries.
Preparations for the competition have intensified since the team's victory in South Africa, with training centred on argument development, critical thinking, research, public speaking and rebuttal techniques.
The team is also being prepared to respond to complex and contemporary issues likely to feature in the competition.
Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana, Dr Austin Luguterah, said the university was working with the team to ensure that its members were adequately prepared for the international competition.
“This is not only about representing the University of Ghana; the team will be carrying the hopes and aspirations of Ghana to Canada. We are therefore working with the team to ensure that they are well prepared, focused and ready to compete at the highest level,” he said.
Dr Luguterah said the team's success at the African championship demonstrated the potential of Ghanaian students when provided with the appropriate environment, opportunities and support to develop their abilities.
The team's progression from the continental championship in South Africa to the World Universities Debate Championship in Canada has generated interest within the University of Ghana community.
The university is encouraging its alumni, partners and the wider Ghanaian public to support the team as it prepares for the competition.
