UniMAC appoints Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong as First Chancellor

The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed Ernest Ofori Sarpong, the Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, as its first Chancellor.

The appointment takes effect on August 1, 2026, following approval by the University Governing Council at its meeting held on May 26, 2026, pursuant to the provisions of UniMAC Statutes.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, UniMAC said Mr Ofori Sarpong will serve as the Ceremonial Head of the University, providing distinguished leadership, championing the University's vision and strategic interests, strengthening its engagement with industry and society, and conferring degrees and other academic honours on behalf of the University.

Impact

UniMAC described its first Chancellor as one of the country's most accomplished entrepreneurs and business leaders, whose career has been characterised by visionary leadership and commitment to national development, and congratulated him on his appointment.

"We are confident that under his distinguished stewardship, UniMAC will continue to deepen its engagement with industry, expand strategic partnerships, enhance its national and international profile, and consolidate its position as the leading university for media, arts, communication, and related disciplines," it added.

UniMAC said his longstanding support for education, youth empowerment and community development made him an outstanding choice for the role.

"As the inaugural Chancellor, Mr Ernest Ofori Sarpong brings to the office a rare combination of entrepreneurial excellence, strategic leadership, public service, and unwavering commitment to national development," the University stated.


The appointment, UniMAC added, marks a significant milestone in the University's history and reinforces its commitment to strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and society.

Profile

Mr Ofori Sarpong is the Founder and CEO of the Special Group of Companies, a diversified conglomerate with interests in manufacturing, real estate, construction, finance and strategic investments. Beyond the Special Group, he is a co-owner of several prominent ventures, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited, and U2 Salt Limited.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, he holds an MSc in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford, UK, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at Ecole Supérieure de Gestion (ESG), France. He was also conferred an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Law by Barkley University in recognition of his contribution to the country's socio-economic development.

He has received numerous national and international honours, including the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year (2025), CEO of the Year - Consumer Drinks at the Ninth Ghana CEO Summit (2025), and the Global Dignity Award for Service to Humanity presented at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Mr Ofori Sarpong also serves in several public and institutional roles. He is currently Board Chairman of the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC), Chairman of the EMY Africa Awards, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana. He is also Global President of the PRESEC Old Boys Association (PRESEC-ODADIE).
