UCC emerges victorious in Graphic Business Sense Challenge Zonal Championship

In a thrilling display of knowledge and skill, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) claimed victory in the Middle Zonal Championship Version 5.0 of the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC).

The event took place at the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region, on Friday, July 14, 2023.

UCC secured a total of 79 points, surpassing the University of Education, Winneba, which obtained 75 points, and the host university, KTU, with 16 points. 

These three institutions have all secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the national championship of TBSC, which will be held in the Greater Accra Region.

The TBSC version 5.0 is sponsored by various esteemed organizations, including MTN Ghana, CompuGhana, Accra Brewery Limited, PwC, Goil Ghana, Cal Bank, McVities, and Glico Life, among others. 

The competition received technical support from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana (ICAG), the Chartered Institute of Marketing, CIMA, as well as media partners such as Graphic Business, GraphicOnline, TV3, Asaase Radio, and KTU Radio. 

The theme for this edition was "Preparation Ahead of Opportunity; Business as a way of Life."

The TBSC has become a highly relevant and respected competition among tertiary business schools nationwide. Its primary purpose is to foster healthy competition among the various business schools while keeping students informed about developments within the business sector and the broader economy. This knowledge empowers students to make informed decisions in their future careers.

Throughout the competition, the University of Education, Winneba initially took the lead in the first round with 21 points, followed by UCC with 16 points, while KTU trailed with five points. 

However, UCC rose to prominence in the second round, securing 22 points and surpassing the University of Education, Winneba, which obtained 16 points, and KTU, which garnered three points.

The subsequent rounds witnessed fluctuations in rankings, with UCC maintaining a strong presence at the top. Ultimately, in the final round, UCC scored nine points, the University of Education, Winneba earned four points, and KTU scored zero.

Representing UCC were Nana Yaw Asarefori Duah, Fatawu Abubakar, and Godson Nkunu. The University of Education, Winneba fielded Simon Ahlidza, James Nana Ofori, and Success Fiadufe Defor. Samuel Teye Ayiku and Ebenezer Mensah represented Koforidua Technical University.

Benjamin Tsatsu Korsinah, the Zonal Manager for Eastern/Volta Regions of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), highlighted that the competition aims to instill business acumen in students and prepare them for the future after graduation. He commended the participants for their preparedness, aligning with GCGL's vision to enhance students' business skills.

Dr. Edward Amarteefio, a Senior Lecturer at UCC School of Business, expressed his congratulations to all participants and highlighted UCC's impressive track record, having reached the finals four times and emerged as champions twice.

Mr. Alhassan Yusif Trawule, the Quiz Master of the competition, announced that all three universities automatically qualified to represent the middle zone at the national level, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and presentation skills in shaping students' confidence and future success.

The participating students acknowledged that the competition would positively impact their performance in accounting and other business-related programs, as well as equip them with valuable insights for engaging in business ventures after graduation.

Samuel Teye Ayiku from KTU expressed disappointment with their performance, attributing it to their first-time participation and the late notification they received regarding the competition, which affected their preparations.
