Three schools in Jaman North receive furniture

Mr Joseph Appiah, acting Director of Plan Ghana, handing over the furniture to the acting President of the Suma Traditional Council, Nana Ansu Adane Kofrobour II (second right). An appeal by the Assemblyman for the Suma-Ahenkro Electoral Area, Mr Desmond Tutu, to philanthropic individuals and organisations to help solve the problem of inadequate furniture confronting three junior high schools in the area has received a positive response.

Plan Ghana, a child-centred non-governmental organisation (NGO) with funds from the Western Union Foundation ( WUF) based in the USA, has provided furniture worth GH¢32,000 for the schools in the Jaman North District the Brong Ahafo Region to enhance teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.

The furniture comprises 300 dual desks for students, 10 tables and chairs for headmasters/teachers and 10 cupboards.

The beneficiary schools are the Sumaman Experimental JHS, Suma Presbyterian JHS and the Suma Roman Catholic JHS.

Some teachers and students of the beneficiary schools described the intervention by Plan Ghana as timely, explaining that before the presentation, there were no cupboards to safely keep textbooks and other teaching and learning materials, which were left to the mercy of termites, cockroaches and mice who feed on them.

Teachers and students did not have enough tables, chairs and desks to sit comfortably, which affected teaching and learning.

Speaking at the handing over of the school furniture at Suma Ahenkro, Mr Joseph Appiah, the acting Director of Plan Ghana, said the furniture was to enhance teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.

He announced that Plan Ghana presently worked in over 500 deprived communities across seven regions in the country, adding that the funding it receives from donors, including the WUF, are used to create a favourable environment in which as many children as possible can grow to achieve their full potential in life.

Mr Appiah said with a total funding of US$36,000 received from the foundation, Plan Ghana had provided school furniture for basic schools in the Brong Ahafo, Volta, Central, Eastern  and Upper West regions, which included the supply of 720 sets of tables and chairs to about 1,500 schoolchildren, 18 tables and chairs for head teachers, teachers and 18 cupboards.

He said the fundamental goal of Plan Ghana was to improve the quality of life of children in the areas of survival, protection, development and participation and focused its attention especially on deprived children in areas who without support might not be able to survive, let alone develop their full potential to become responsible citizens.

Mr Appiah urged the beneficiary schools to take good care of the furniture to prolong its life span.

Mr Tutu, who is also the Sunyani Municipal Director of the Information Service Department (ISD), thanked Plan Ghana for coming to the aid of the schools after he had made the request and said it would go a long way to enhance teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.

The acting President of the Suma Traditional Council, Nana Ansu Adane Kofrobour II, who presided over the ceremony, expressed his appreciation and that of the traditional area to the donors.
