The two residential facilities, costing GH¢80,000, were financed by the Makbraneth Foundation of Canada through  its local partners, the Northern Empowerment Association (NEA), both non-governmental organisations ( NGO), to enhance teaching and learning in rural basic schools in the northern part of the region.

According to the Ghana Education Service (GES), a research conducted recently revealed that teacher absenteeism and lateness to school had been the major causes of abysmal performance of pupils and students at the basic level of education.

Therefore, the provision of the two residential facilities for the teachers in the two communities is welcome news for all stakeholders in education delivery and  the two   communities.

Speaking at separate ceremonies at Subinso No. 1 and Branam, to inaugurate the residential facilities, Mr Aidoo said district assemblies have been urged to include the construction of residential accommodation for teachers in their development plans.

This, he said was a measure to address the acute teacher residential accommodation situation and its attendant problems, resulting in teachers refusing postings to rural areas.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, Dr George Adjei Henn, for his part, said teacher absenteeism and lateness to school have been identified as the major causes of poor academic performance in school.

The Municipal Chief Executive for  Wenchi, Nana Yaw Adjei, for his part, commended the two NGOs for the gesture and called for similar partnerships between such organisations, government and the assemblies to meet the development needs of the people.

The Executive Director of the NEA, Dr David Mensah and the Chairman of the foundation, Mr Jacques Lapointe, said they would continue to partner rural communities in the northern sector of the region and the entire country to provide them with educational infrastructure to improve education.

The Gyasehene of Wenchi, Nana Yeboah Asuamah Kusi and the chief of Brenam, Nana Kwaku Bediako VI, who presided at the separate functions at Subinso and Brenam   thanked the NEA and the foundation for the kind gesture.
