Sunyani Technical University discounts fees for female engineering students
THE Sunyani Technical University (STU) has announced a 20 per cent discount on the school fees of all female engineering students, beginning from the next academic year.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, who announced this, said the motive was to encourage or whip up the interest of more females to pursue various engineering programmes at the university.

Affirmative action
At a durbar of students and staff of the university, he explained that the move formed part of an affirmative action instituted to motivate more females to pursue engineering programmes.
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah explained that because the university was a technical institution, it usually struggled to get female students to study engineering programmes.
“So, the university has taken this affirmative action to give special consideration to prospective female engineering students,” Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah stated, adding that the move was expected to attract more females into the engineering field.
CCTV at examination halls
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah said plans were far advanced to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at all examination halls and other vantage points in the university.
According to him, the idea was to help reduced examination malpractices, promote the integrity of the university and help enhanced security on campus.
He said the university had established a police post to assist the university’s internal security in ensuring law and order on campus and among members of the university community.
He, therefore, challenged the students to eschew all negative practices likely to put them into trouble and advised them to concentrate on their studies in order to obtain good class at the end of their programmes.
Industrial attachment
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah explained that besides the various ultra-modern workshops and laboratories on campus, the university had signed several memoranda with a number of public and private institutions to enable students to undertake practical training as part of their studies.
He gave an assurance that the university would tar the main road linking the main campus to the Water-loo end of the campus to reduce the dusty nature of the area.
Responding to an appeal made by the students on the provision of a shuttle bus for students at the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) hostel and Water-loo to the main campus and vice versa, he assured them that the management would deliberate on the matter.
He also said the university was working to procure more furniture to improve the furniture situation in the various lecture halls.
However, he cautioned students to desist from leaving the furniture outside lecture halls after using them.
