Parents, students and the general public have therefore been reminded to take note that the reporting date for first year students is  December 4, 2023 as indicated on the Placement form, a statement issued by the GES on Saturday, December 2 said.

The statement was signed by the Head of Public Relations at the GES, Cassandra Twum Ampofo

It said it was the expectation of the GES management that schools begin registration and orientation of students from the 4th of December 2023.

"Per the academic calendar, there would be Christmas break on the 21st of December 2023 and resume on the 3rd of January to continue academic work till March 5th 2024," it added.

Management urges all students yet to do their Self Placement to do so as quickly as practicable.

"We appreciate all stakeholders for collaborating and supporting the CSSPS process to this point.

"We continue to ask for your patience to ensure the academic calendar for SHS is implemented without hitches in order to get back to the pre-covid academic calendar," it added.

Last week some members of parliament urged the Ministry of Education to reconsider the decision to allow first year students of senior high schools (SHS) to report on Monday, December 4, 2023.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, for instance had proposed that the reopening date be shifted to the first week of January to allow both parents and teachers to prepare adequately.

The Speaker has subsequently invited the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, to appear before the House on Monday, December 4 to brief the House on the reopening date and other matters.

The move by the speaker followed a statement by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi North and Ranking Member on the Education Committee, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, on what he said was a rush to allow the students to go to school on Monday.

The MPs, all from the minority side expressed concern on what they said were challenges some parents would have to go through between Thursday and Sunday to get their children ready to go to school on Monday.

The MPs, said it was incomprehensible for schools placement to be released just two days ago and rush students to report on Monday.

The MPs said they have received calls from some constituents for support and even to effect changes in their placement.

Below is a copy of the GES statement reiterating that reporting is on Monday, December 4, 2023
