Prof. Buor inducted into GAAS

 

A Professor of Medical Geography who is  also the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Valley View University (VVU), Prof.  Daniel Buor, has been inducted into the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS).

He was inducted by the President of GAAS, Prof. F.K.A Allotey, during the society’s 2013 Founder’s Week Celebrations held in Accra on the theme: “Education For National Development.”

The Vice President (Arts) of the GAAS, Prof. Akilagpa Sawyer, who introduced Prof. Buor, read his profile before swearing him in to be accepted into the society.

Prof. Buor was born on February 17, 1952 at Atwima Manhyia in the Atwima Nwabiagya District in the Ashanti Region to Mr Kwame Buor of blessed memory and Madam Akosua Nyarko.

He is married to Mary and has five children- Seth, Joseph, Daniel, Comfort and Emmanuel- and serves as an elder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Prof. Buor attended the then Agona SDA Teacher Training College (now Agona SDA SHS) from 1968 to 1972, where he was awarded the Four-Year-Post-Primary Teacher Certificate.

He taught at Abuoso Methodist Primary School in the Ashanti Region from 1972 to 1978 and was admitted to the University of Ghana to read Geography and Political Science, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Honours in July 1981.

In 1988, he was awarded MPhil in Geography by the University of Ghana, was confirmed lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 1990 and consequently promoted to senior lecturer in 1994.

He was admitted to the University of Ghana to read PhD in Geography, with specialisation in Medical Geography in 1996, gaining his first PhD in 2001.

Prof. Buor was awarded a second PhD in Health Care Studies by the Maastricht University in The Netherlands through a  sandwich programme in 2004.

He also holds a postgraduate certificate in Health Services, Research and Practice from the Netherlands Institute of Health Services, and another in Strategy of Data Analysis in Epidemiologic and Public Health Research from the Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research in 2004.

Prof. Buor was afterwards promoted to the rank of associate professor in 2001 and later promoted full professor in 2006.

He was the primus provost of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, KNUST, from December 2004 to October 2010 and has held the position of Vice-Chancellor for the VVU since July 2010.

He has 36 peer-reviewed and conference publications, 213 other publications, presented 60 papers at local and international conferences and is a reviewer of 12 international journals, including Health Policy, Social Science and Medicine, International Journal of Human Geography and Environmental Sciences (GeoJournal).

In 2011, his publication, “Gender and utilisation of health services in Ashanti Region, Ghana,” published in the Health Policy: 2004 Sept; 69 (3) 375-88,  was adjudged by BioMedilib/Medline to be among the top 10 articles to be published in the domain, ‘for all time.’
