The block was completed at a cost of GH¢600,000.

Apart from that, a 400-bed capacity hostel at the Kwahu campus, Abetifi, has also been completed at a cost of GH¢1,500,000 and inaugurated.

The new block contains six lecture halls, each of which can accommodate 30 students at a time, eight washrooms and three offices.

At a short ceremony to officially inaugurate the graduate block at the Akuapem campus, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt Rev. Professor Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, said the construction of the new graduate block was the beginning of many facilities to be put up.

He expressed the hope that many of such projects would be in the form of high-rise buildings to attract more students to pursue academic excellence in all campuses of the university.

Rt Rev. Prof. Mante said the completion of the graduate block would serve as a springboard to spur the university on to do more than what it was currently doing.

Qualified staff

Rt Rev. Prof. Mante said there was, therefore, the need to employ highly qualified staff to be in charge of the graduate programmes at the university being sought by many students.

He said it was, therefore, in that direction that more facilities were being provided at the university.

The moderator, who is also the Chancellor of the PUG, pointed out that the church would do everything possible to support the development drive of the university.

He thanked the President of the PUG, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, for his immense contributions towards the development of the university since he assumed office in 2021.

For his part, Professor Owusu said on his induction into office in January 2022, he decided to undertake an initiative dubbed: "President Special Project" to add a number of facilities to those existing at both the Akuapem and Okwahu campuses.

He said the projects consisted of a fence wall, apartments for staff and auditoria, all for the two campuses.

Prof. Owusu said while the fence for the Okwahu campus was almost complete, architectural designs for the first phase of construction of single/two-bedroom apartments comprising 10-unit single-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments for staff across the campuses were ready.

Hope

The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, who cut the tape to officially inaugurate the facility, said the graduate block, apart from its physical nature, represented hope, progress and opportunity for nurturing of young graduate students.
