Plans underway to strengthen ICT learning

A Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, has stated that plans are underway to strengthen the teaching of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at all levels of education.

He said over the years, the Ministry of Education had purchased ICT materials to enhance the teaching of ICT.

Mr Ablakwa said this when he paid a working visit to the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling in Accra.

Importance of ICT

Mr Ablakwa said the application of ICT could help address challenges confronting the economy and stressed that ICT was essential to the development of Ghana.

He, therefore, encouraged the centre to adopt ICT in its modules in order to make the needed impact.

The Director of the centre, Mr Joshua Caleb Mallet, told the minister that it had only six staff members as against the 45 required.

He informed the minister that the centre had organised academic lessons for prison inmates across the country.

“We extended the distance education lessons to prisons and this had enabled some prison inmates to pass WAEC examinations,” he added.

Mr Mallet said the centre had produced over 2000 academic materials for secondary education.

He said due to the importance of ICT, the centre had employed ICT modules in the dissemination of information and he called on the media to support the centre in its activities.
