Parents asked to promote children’s welfare

The Administrative Officer at the Ghana Police Training School, Superintendent Brown Mercy Wilson, has called on parents and guardians to support  their children to achieve greater prospects in life.

According to her the situation where parents sat unconcerned as their children browsed the Internet, accessed the airwaves and used smart phones and other gadgets without any control was gradually endangering the moral fibre of the future generation.

She attributed the incidence of laziness and indiscipline among children to the refusal of some parents to train children to do simple house chores and other activities, all in the name of modernity.

Superintendent Wilson made these observations when she addressed the 41st Anniversary Graduation and Speech and Prize giving Day of the St. Martin de Porres School at Dansoman last Saturday.

The ceremony saw the 85  students graduating.

Pupils and students also received various awards for excelling and making rapid progress in their studies, while some were rewarded for comporting themselves as well as for decent dressing.

Responsible parenting

Speaking on the theme “Improving the quality of child education through parent- teacher collaboration,”  Superintendent Wilson said with a lot of parents now buying modern electronic gadgets for their children, students and pupils spent a lot of time away from their books.

In addition, she said, parents often failed to monitor the friends and acquaintances their children associated with, a development she said, had increased the incidence of  societal ills.

Institution’s strides

The headmaster of the school, Mr Emmanuel Ntow, in his report,  said the school had recorded remarkable academic feats since its inception and also contributed immensely towards national development.

This year,  the St. Martin de Porres School made a cash donation of GH¢ 10,000 to Ms Betty Holdbrook, a kidney patient, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to facilitate her medical care, he said.

The school also presented a suction machine and a projector to the Dansoman Polyclinic and donated furniture and assorted textbooks to some deprived schools in the Greater Accra and Central regions.

Mr. Ntow said the management of the school embarked on the development of the school’s infrastructure, starting with the construction of a six unit classroom block to help accommodate the increasing number of students.
