As part of efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19, the Kumasi Technical University ( KsTU) has donated samples of its foot-operated handwashing machines to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and eight other institutions.

The mechanical machines were constructed by the Engineering Department of the university over the last two months under a project championed by lead researcher Ing. Dr Abena Obiri Yeboah.

Other beneficiaries of the donation included the Manhyia Palace, the regional police headquarters and the Regional Coordinating Council.

The registrar of KsTU, Ebenezer Kofi Boakye said the university was in talks with the government to supply all Senior High Schools with the devices which can prevent the spread of the coronavirus.'

He said as part of announcing its achievement in terms of the innovation, the university has decided to supply key institutions with the machine and call for more support.

"As a technical university, we are here to fix challenges and this is just one of them," he said.

The Metropolitan Coordinating Director of the KMA, Kwadwo Akuamoah Boateng, promised to advertise the machine and rally for support for the product to be replicated.

He expressed appreciation to KsTU for the donation and said the university was living up to its technical mandate.

Mr Boateng said there was a need to promote and encourage technical universities to do more because no country can develop without technical education.
