Ketasco old student launches awards scheme

A philanthropist, Madam Josephine Ohene-Boateng, has instituted an awards scheme for needy, brilliant students at the Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Volta Region.

The annual scheme would see three students being presented with cash awards.

The initiative is to be extended to the Holy Child School in Cape Coast.

Mrs Ohene-Boateng is an old student of both the Keta SHTS and the Holy Child School.

She had her Advanced Level education at the Keta SHS and her Ordinary Level at the Holy Child School.

Decision

Madam Ohene-Boateng, who is the Deputy Managing Director in charge of Corporate affairs and Sustainability of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, told the Daily Graphic that the decision to set up the awards scheme was a personal initiative she had always wanted to do.

“Realising that not all children have the same level of playing field and I was a typical example of that. So if by God’s grace we have gone through and reached a certain level in life, I thought I should also help others,” she said.

She indicated that the scheme was a way of showing appreciation to God for what He had done in her life by also helping others to come out of the situation they were in.

Vulnerable

Being a philanthropist who likes helping the vulnerable, she said there was the need to encourage such people.

Asked how the beneficiaries would be selected, she said the school would do that since it had the academic records of the students and knew those that were needy.

Madam Ohene-Boateng said the awards presentation would be done during the homecoming celebration of the Keta SHS while that of Holy Child would be done during its speech and prize-giving day ceremony.

At the launch of the scheme, the Headmaster of the Keta SHTS, Mr Isaac Dzidzienyo, commended Mrs Ohene-Boateng for her efforts in helping to improve the standard of education in the area.

The Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Emmanuel Gemegah, called on the students to study hard to merit the awards.

Two students - Abayateye Gabriel Ngmlotey and Adokpa Dameris, thanked Mrs Ohene-Boateng for the support to encourage them to study harder.

The Keta SHTS emerged third at the 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz.
