Chartered accountants, staff and council members of ICAG led by the Vice President of ICAG, Augustine Addo, and the CEO, Kwasi Agyemang, planted trees at the basic and junior high sections of the school.

The institute, which is the accountancy regulatory body, also made a cash donation to the school.

Rationale

Mr Agyemang explained that ICAG decided to participate in the Green Ghana Day because as a public institution that regulates the accountancy profession, it had a duty to contribute to the well-being of society.

Tree planting, he said was a crucial part of the sustainable efforts to protect the environment from degradation, deforestation and climate change.

“ICAG as the regulator of accountancy with many objects, including the promotion of the teaching of accountancy and ensuring that accountancy is done in line with the law and international best practices, we have an obligation to engage in such national activities”, he said.

According to him, people often failed to take issues affecting the environment seriously, with a wrong impression that the world would continue to remain the same even in the face of destruction of the environment.

“There is serious environmental degradation caused by human beings and sadly in Ghana, illegal mining is ravaging the country.

It is, therefore, the responsibility of everyone to help protect and restore the environment,’ he said.

On why the institute decided to plant the trees at the La-Bawaleshie School, Mr Agyemang said the school was not far from the institute and as neighbours, it decided to contribute positively to the school.

He added that ICAG was celebrating its 60th anniversary and as part of the celebration, the institute was embarking on numerous corporate social responsibility activities in diverse areas for the betterment of society.
