‘Give all schools equal opportunities’

A lecturer at the School of Law, University of Ghana, Mr Kwame Gyan, has challenged the government to ensure that all schools have equal opportunities and facilities.

He said the categorisation of senior high schools had put some of the schools at a disadvantage and called for a ‘level playing field’ to enable students from the so-called category ‘D’ schools to realise their full potentials.

Mr Gyan  threw the challenge at the 29th anniversary and first Speech and Prize-giving Day celebration of the Kwabeng Anglican Senior High Technical School.

He said it was important for all children to be given equal access to quality education,  stressing that access to quality education was a shared responsibility and should not be left on the shoulders of teachers.

Touching on the theme, “Access to quality education a key to national development,” Mr Gyan  stressed that quality education played an important role in the development of the individual, the society and the nation as a whole, adding that access to quality education was a necessary starting point for social and economic mobility.

He promised a scholarship scheme worth GH¢10,000 to brilliant, needy students from the 2014 to 2018 academic years.

The headmistress of the school, Mrs Benedicta Foli, in her report, commended the PTA of the school for undertaking a number of developmental activities such as the construction of a four-unit classroom block, the only boys’ dormitory block and  currently the construction of the headmistress’ bungalow.

She, however, mentioned challenges faced by the school such as lack of staff bungalows, a sick bay/dispensary, a science laboratory, a library, and water storage facilities and appealed to the government, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders of education to come to the aid of the school.

Mrs Foli acknowledged the important role the founding fathers of the school, the Anglican Church, played and eulogised them for their foresight.
