‘Champion principles to develop nation’s manpower’
The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, has charged stakeholders in the educational sector to safeguard the principles of hard work, integrity and patriotism to groom the required manpower for national development.
He said all stakeholders must seek to preserve and protect those values and ensure that they were strictly inculcated in the country’s human resource development.

Most Rev. Dr Boafo was speaking at the 182nd Anniversary Speech and Prize-giving Day of Wesley Girls’ High School, which was on the theme: “Safeguarding the Vision of our Founding Mothers — The Way to Achieving Holistic Education,” in Cape Coast on Saturday, February 09, 2019.
He paid tribute to the founding mothers of the school, who ensured that girls received total education despite the challenges of the time and called on teachers to instil the right virtues into their students so as to create a future generation that would grow the nation.
He also commended the Old Girls’ Association and Parent-Teacher Association for their immense contribution and support to the smooth running of the school, pointing out that, the church would contribute its quota to help provide the needs of the school.
Responsibilities
A Human Resource Practitioner and Gender Advocate, Ms Atawa Dzabea Akyea, an old student and guest speaker for the occasion, urged Ghanaians to be aware of their responsibilities to their communities and the broader society to which they belonged.
Headmistress
In her report, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Kay Oppong-Ankomah, commended teachers and students for their hard work, saying, that led to an improvement in the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
“There was an improvement in the overall results with 90.26 per cent passes in A’s and B’s as against 88.83 per cent of the previous year,” she added.
Mrs Oppong-Ankomah said the school’s science block was in need of science equipment and fixtures and fittings to enable the students to have a serene atmosphere for academic work, considering the increase in the number of science students in the school, and appealed for support from stakeholders to assist in addressing the needs of the school.
An Executive Member of Societe General Ghana, Mrs Dorcas Adwoa Hazel Quaye, who was the Lady President for the occasion, advised students to abide by the school’s values and principles, and uphold its motto.
Presentations
The Member of Parliament for the Cape Coast North Constituency, Mrs Barbara Asher Ayisi, also presented the school with 20 pieces of street light and a cash donation of GH¢ 5,000 to the teachers.
The 1998 Year Group, the main group that sponsored the celebration, presented the school with a refurbished Home Economics block and a-10,000 litre Polytank with a booster machine installed.
The group, in collaboration with the 1968, 1978, 1988 year groups, has also upgraded the school’s field by providing drains and also constructed and refurbished sanitation facilities, as well as a research laboratory for staff.
