Winners of Junior Graphic Essay Competition commended
A student of the Mizpah International School in Accra, Mariam Aniwa, has emerged winner of the 2019 Junior Graphic National Essay Competition.
William Nana Kwame Danso of the Crown Prince Academy took the second position while Ms Michelle Pinaman Eku, a student of Witsands International School in Tema, placed third.

For her prize, Miss Aniwa, 14, will receive one Graidup tablet, GH¢1,500 and souvenirs from the sponsors of the competition.
Master Danso will also be given a Graidup tablet, GH¢1,000 as well as products from the sponsors while Ms Eku will take home a Graidup tablet, GH¢500 and products from the sponsors.
The acting Editor of the Junior Graphic, Ms Doreen Hammond, who announced this in Accra, said winners from the fourth to 10th positions would receive a tablet each and products from the sponsors.
Commendation
She commended all children who took part in the competition.
Ms Hammond said there were more than 1,000 entries from schoolchildren across the country and out of that number, 49 were shortlisted to participate in the final contest from which 10 were selected as winners.
She said during the preliminary stage of the competition, the students were given three questions from which they had to select one to write on.
Questions
“At the final contest, however, they were given two questions to select one. The essay questions were as follows:
Q1. Write an article for publication in a national newspaper on the causes of population explosion, its effect on society and what can be done to reduce it.
Q2. Write a letter to the President of the Republic of Ghana, telling him how, in your own opinion, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Five on Gender Equality can be achieved.
The Junior Graphic National Essay Competition was organised for schoolchildren at the basic level with the aim of assisting them to learn how to write essays correctly, improve on their grammar, build a good vocabulary and be creative in order to perform well in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Theme
The theme for this year’s competition was: “Reading widely, writing right: Key to excellence”.
Sponsors of the competition were: BiC, TLM Ghana, producers of Graidup tablets; Cocoa Processing Company, SDGs Advisory Unit, Office of the President, the Ghana Library Authority and Twellium Industries.
