Work has begun on a GH¢2.5 million four-unit two-storey residential block for teachers at the Ho Mawuli Senior High School.

When completed, each unit will have two bedrooms and a study.

The project, which is being funded by the Old Mawuli Students’ Union (OMSU) is now at the foundation level and expected to be completed at the end of 2024, before the 75th anniversary celebration of the school in 2025.

The President of OMSU, Richard Buthelezi Nyarko, who disclosed these to the Daily Graphic in Ho, said the various year groups and chapters of the union were being levied to finance the project.

Mr Nyarko said presently, only 13 per cent of the teaching staff were resident on the school compound, adding that the ongoing “legacy project” was meant to keep more teachers on the compound.

“The proximity between the teachers and students will enhance teaching, learning and discipline in the school, which now has more than 4,000 students,” he maintained.

Mr Nyarko appealed to corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to support OMSU with funds and building materials to complete the project in good time.

Meanwhile, OMSU has renovated one staff bungalow on the compound and carried out a project to expand the school clinic.

In addition, the union has installed a borehole to supply water to the headmaster’s bungalow and the Aku House (dormitory block), as well as some classrooms.

Mr Nyarko said the union had also stocked the school library with more than 700 books.

Flood victims

In another development, OMSU has provided a consignment of food items, educational materials and other relief worth GH¢75,000 to victims of the recent floods at Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

The items included bags of rice, cartons of cooking oil, sanitary pads, mosquito coils and nets, pureed tomatoes, hand sanitizers and 1000 bags of water.

The donation was made through the Mepe Development Association (MDA).

The OMSU president said the gesture was on humanitarian grounds.

The Public Relations Officer of MDA, Romeo Adzah expressed gratitude for the items, saying the gesture was highly touching.

He gave an assurance that the items would be distributed among the flood victims fairly.

So far, Mr Adzah said the central committee of the MDA had distributed relief items to more than 6,000 households at Mepe, the seven camps and various villages in the area.
