The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has backed investigations into the alleged sexual misconduct between the headmaster of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) and some female students.
It said that, with about 19 female students making the allegations, there was a need to establish the veracity or otherwise of the matter, in addition to police action.
"So the headmaster cannot be at post while the investigation is ongoing.
That is why he has to be interdicted for due process to go ahead to establish the fact," the President of NAGRAT, Jacob Anaba, told the Daily Graphic in Accra last Tuesday.
Events
He said although the alleged incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) was localised, it raised broader concerns about the need for leaders entrusted with responsibilities to be responsive.
On the issue, he said he would have expected the district to have acted long ago, regardless of whether the allegations were true or not, since the students had written letters about the matter.
He questioned why the allegations had not been investigated to determine the appropriate action.
NaSIA
To address such issues, he tasked the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) to intensify its monitoring of schools and encourage students who had experienced sexual advances, among other forms of misconduct, to speak up.
He said the issue might not be limited to Obuasi SHTS.
“NaSIA should intensify the work it is doing at the beginning of the term, in the middle of the term and at the end of the term.
It should engage everybody in the school and gauge the temperature of the school,” he said.
Moreover, he said every school was supposed to have durbars where the teachers and the students were expected to interact and then speak their minds.
He underscored the need for teachers and students to be disciplined because without that, education delivery would not be effective.
“When we admit students, we give them orientation – we tell them the dos and don'ts.
Let's insist and follow through with that.
Let the district directors and team monitor the school and ensure that these things do not occur.
“So what we are calling for is a serious investigation to establish the truth.
Not only in Obuasi SHTS, but all over Ghana.
All the secondary schools and technical schools.
Let's have a serious introspection of ourselves.
Let's talk to ourselves.
Because we make the leaders.
We build this nation.
We can't build this nation with this attitude,” he emphasised.
Ministry
Last week, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, directed the Ghana Education Service to suspend the headmaster of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School over allegations of sexual misconduct.
A statement from the ministry issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, said the minister considered the issue serious and had directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to take immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter.
The minister also requested the police to commence investigations into the matter.
