‘Invest in children’s character formation’

The President of the Foundation for Generational Thinkers (FOGET), Mr Prosper Afetsi, says parents should not only invest in their children’s education but play a key role in the development of their character.

According to him, “the best education must be accompanied by virtues and values such as discipline, hard work, respect, responsibility, patriotism etc”.

“Without good character, the children will become misfits in society no matter what school you enrol them in,” Mr Afetsi said at the 35th Anniversary Speech and Prize-giving Day of the St Charles School Limited in Accra.

Character

In forming the character of their children, he said, parents must be actively involved and not leave such responsibility to the teachers, neighbours or religious leaders alone.

“You must spend quality and precious time with your children and interact with them and teach them the right things to do,” Mr Afetsi said.

He expressed the hope that parents were not making all the money in the world at the expense of the total development of their children since “investing in your child’s education is not about paying the school fees and providing learning materials alone”.

“It also means you help in educating and developing your child. Many parents don’t know what is happening in their children’s life; they think once they pay fees, that is all.

“We don’t check on their performance, no relationship with the school and they will never come for parent-teacher-association meetings”.

God

The FOGET President thanked God for how far He had brought the school and also lauded the owners of the school for allowing themselves to be used by God to raise many great people for the country.

The history of Banana Inn and its surroundings, he said, could never be written without mentioning the name of St. Charles School Limited.

Theme

Mr Afetsi said education was indeed the best investment parents could make since it was key for any prosperous society.

“Investing in our children’s education isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a smart thing to do. Educate a man and he will develop himself. Without education, development in any area has a very limited scope,” he added.

An old student of the school and Sales and Marketing Manager of Eurotour Ghana Limited, Ms Doris Anaa Bill, encouraged the students to work hard in order to achieve their dreams in life.
