Foundation launches scholarship scheme for brilliant needy students

As part of its efforts to foster academic excellence and promote healthy academic competition among pupils of the New Bomfa Methodist JHS within the Juaben Municipality, the Oteng-Adusei Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has instituted a scholarship award scheme for brilliant needy students.

At the launch of the award scheme, nine brilliant needy pupils from the Bomfa Methodist JHS were awarded scholarships to pursue their secondary education.

The scheme would also award the overall best three Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) students of the school, the best female student and the best student in mathematics and science.

Speaking at the launch of the scholarship award scheme, the founder of the Oteng-Adusei Foundation, Sammy Oteng, a native of New Bomfa, said the scheme was to promote healthy competition among students at New Bomfa and also promote academic excellence.

“We need to nurture a group of brilliant students who will become agents of community development, an award that will produce lawyers, engineers, architects and many other professionals making New Bomfa our educational hub,” he said.

He said the foundation would provide a total of GH¢200,000 annually to support the selected students.

Selection of awards

For the selection of the winners, Mr Oteng said a seven member-committee had been set up with representatives from traditional leaders, parents, the council of churches, the municipal education directorate, headmistress and a teacher from the basic school to steer the affairs and selections for all the awards categories.

He was grateful to his family for the massive support and encouragement in nurturing the dream and setting up a family legacy.

The Juaben Municipal Director of Education, Phyllis Boateng, advised parents and the entire community to get involved with the education of children to ensure they performed well academically to benefit from the award scheme instituted by the Oteng-Adusei Foundation for sustainability.

She was grateful to the founder of the scholarship scheme, which she described as the first of its kind by an individual in the community. She promised that the education directorate would ensure the progress and development of education in the community.
