CSUC launches 50th anniversary celebration

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called for a collective effort among the state, religious bodies and opinion leaders to address the moral decadence setting in society to redefine the national development agenda.

As a country, described as “religious”, the MP said there was a deficit in the discharge of the responsibilities of state actors, which made it imperative for research into the country's moral compact.

The MP made the call at the launch of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi.

He said the moral decadence in the country did not support the notion that Ghana was a Christian country.

The year-long celebration of CSUC’s 50th anniversary, a faith-based private institution, would climax in 2024 with some ambitious projects and programmes earmarked to celebrate the five-decade success.

Support for private institutions

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu underscored the importance of the government in assisting private institutions in absorbing qualified students who were unable to gain admission into the few public institutions in the country.

He advocated an amendment to Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution to include private institutions for government sponsorship and support so that every Ghanaian tertiary student, public or private would enjoy the right to equal educational opportunity privilege in the constitution.

“It is not surprising that private institutions avoid investment in science and technology due to the cost involved.

If the playing field must be levelled and equal, then those students in private tertiary institutions must be accorded such opportunities, that is pursuing courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM),” the minister said.

Former Chief Justice

A former Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Sophia Akuffo, commended CSUC for making the institution relevant to the demands of society and contributing to economic growth.

She was hopeful the university college would soon be accredited and become an autonomous tertiary institution, considering its impressive achievements.

Achievement

The President of CSUC, Prof. Samuel Kofi Afrane, said the institution, which started with five students, had over the years produced over 8,000 graduates serving in various capacities in both the public and private sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

He said CSUC started as a theological centre and had now transformed into a Liberal Arts university college, offering programmes in business, communication, education, nursing, information technology, computer science, planning and development, among others.

The anniversary logo was unveiled with a fundraising activity to support the 50th anniversary projects, which included the installation of a Solar energy system on campus, the acquisition of a bus, the upgrading of an IT infrastructure and the construction of a childcare centre for children of CSUS students who are mothers.
