Call off strike - GES Director-General appeals

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof Ernest Kofi Davis, has appealed to teachers to rescind their decision and return to the classroom as the government works to address their concerns.

He said the government was committed to working constructively with teachers and their representatives to resolve all outstanding matters affecting them.

Prof Davis gave the assurance that the government was working to submit all the necessary input forms demanded by the Controller and Accountant-General's Department to facilitate the process.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, he said some of the promoted teachers had already been paid, while work was ongoing to process the payments for the remaining teachers.

"We recognise the importance of ensuring that teachers receive their rightful entitlements, and the service is working with the relevant institutions to complete the outstanding processes.

“The number of staff working on the document has been increased at the IPPD ,and they are working hard to complete the assignment,” Prof Davis assured the striking unions.

He said the service had paid attention to the issues that had been raised by the teacher unions and was making every effort to ensure that “our teachers return to the classroom, and that teaching and learning proceed without unnecessary disruption.”

Update

The press conference was to provide an update on the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic year, and to address some recent concerns, including the strike by some teacher unions.

Prof Davis stated that the GES had been conscious about the government’s priorities for teachers that were within its power, citing for instance that with the support of the government, through the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders such as the public Services Commission (PSC), many teachers now had the opportunity to attain the highest rank.

“The overall establishment ceiling for Director Two has been raised from 272 to 4,405, which is more than 1,500 per cent increase, while the overall establishment for the Director

One has been increased from 20 to 88 being 340 per cent increase,” he explained.

He announced that advertisement for promotion had been floated, and applications had been received and preparations were far advanced for the examination to be written within.

Speaking on the progress made so far, Prof Davis said, “for the first time in approximately six years, we have reached a point where students across the various levels of our education system have reported to school within September.

“This did not happen by accident. It was achieved through hard work,” Prof. Davis noted, indicating that the progress had created a more predictable and synchronised academic calendar, giving parents and other stakeholders the opportunity to plan effectively.
