GES promotes seven award winning teachers

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has promoted seven award winning teachers as part of motivating and encouraging them to do more in their fields of work.

The teachers had won various prizes at the Ghana Teacher Prize and their promotions are part of moves by the GES to give them extra motivation to work.

The promoted teachers are Mr Robert Gariba (Richard Akwei Memorial School), winner of last year’s Best Teacher Prize who participated in this year’s Global Teacher Prize.

He was promoted from Assistant Director One to Deputy Director, while Ms Augusta Lartey-Young (Kaneshie Secondary Technical School) who won a teacher’s prize at the African Union (AU), also moved from an Assistant Director One to a Deputy Director.

Another teacher, Ms Sabina Koba Dosu (St Dominic R/C School), who was the second runner up at last year’s Ghana Teacher Prize, was promoted from Principal Superintendent to Assistant Director II, while Antepim Owusu (Nsuta Catholic School), who was a second runner-up IN 2018, moved from a Principal Superintendent to Assistant Director II.

Ms Phillipa Darko (State Experimental M/A KG School), who was the first runner-up in 2019, is now an Assistant Director II from a rank of Principal Superintendent.

The rest are Ms Christiana Yeye Koperebarah (Yumba Special School), a second runner up this year, moved from the rank of Principal Superintendent to Assistant Director II and Mr Nicholas Gborse of the Bishop Herman Senior High School, and Ghana’s Most Outstanding Teacher in 2018, from Principal Superintendent to Assistant Director II.

Minister

The Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who announced this in Accra yesterday at a ceremony to honour sponsors of this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize, noted that “your promotions are with immediate effect”.

“As a token of our of the appreciation of the employer, bringing us good news they celebrate in your success. We wish you become mentors of other teachers and serve as role models for both your students and your friends. Based on this recognition, other teachers would see that putting in the efforts would not go unrecognised,” he said.

Sponsors

At the ceremony, the sponsors were presented with shields and certificates.

The Ministry of Education and the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Prempeh said, were committed to the welfare of teachers in the country, hence the introduction of the rebranded Best Teacher’s Prize to the Ghana Teacher Prize to motivate teachers to give off their best.

“The Ghana Teacher Prize 2019 is the second version after the rebranding to fit the World Teacher Prize because we believe that our best teachers are fit to be recognised the world over. Since the rebranding and for two years running; last year and this year, two of our teachers have been part of the 50 best teachers in the world”.

“The winner of last year’s Best Teacher Prize who participated in this year’s Global Teacher Prize, Mr Robert Gariba of the Richard Akwei Memorial School and the winner of this year’s African Union (AU) Teacher Prize, Ms Augusta Lartey Young of the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, Legon, also emerged again as a Best Teacher on the African continent.

“This shows that the rebranding to the Ghana Teacher Prize has been successful in that our teachers even get to be recognised globally because our teacher prize existed long before the Global Teacher Prize,” he said.

Recognition

Dr Opoku Prempeh also commended the sponsors of the awards, saying, “we give due recognition to those who had continued to sponsor our best teachers”.

“We do acknowledge support from GETFund, the Trustees of GES Occupational Pension Scheme, SIC-Life, Prudential Bank, Data Bank, Glico Pension, UNESCO, EPP Books and Services, Innolink Security and Confidential Print, UNIJAY Foundation, Petra Trust, Teachers and Educational Workers Union, GCB Bank, Star Oil, Sunset Hotel, Miklin Hotel, Noda Hotel, Sedco Publications, Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers, ATAG, Ghana Aids Commission as well as the media partners, the Ghana Broad Casting Corporation, Class Media Group, Angel FM , Kumasi and the Despite Group,” he added.
