Former UG VC Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is new President of Presby Univ

The new President of the Presbyterian University College, Ghana (PUCG), Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has announced a review into the issues that led to many teaching and non-teaching staff resigning from the university over the years.

He made the announcement at his investiture, conducted by the Chancellor of the university, Rt. Rev. Professor Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, who is also the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana,

Prof Oduro Owusu who is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana pledged to consolidate and build on the PUCG's progress and achievements in repositioning it as a world-class research and training institution.

The new president said he will help tailor teaching and research in the university to the needs of industry, the public and private sectors, as well as the country’s developmental agenda in general.

Adding that under his leadership, the Presbyterian University College would engage relevant actors in the private and public sectors to identify key areas of focus and emphasis to guide the alignment of research and training programmes.

Prof. Oduro said PUCG as a Christian University in Ghana, would take the lead in fostering positive attitudinal change and character moulding.

“Specifically, my aim is that we inculcate in both students and staff, the sense of institutional leadership, where dedication to work, respect for one another, respect for processes and procedures, time management, and environmental cleanliness are upheld and jealously guarded as important core values of the university,” he promised.

He expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for the trust reposed in him to lead the university to chat a new path for the development of the university, adding that he will need total support of all to realize his dreams and ambitions for the university.

Moderator of the General Assembly

The Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante urged the president to use his position to employ the collegiate system where both the church and traditional leaders in Kwahuman would be brought on board to foster development and progress in the university.

He challenged him to be selfless in dealing with other people and rely on his rich years of experience in academics to build on other sources of funding for the university.

Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, called on him to eschew complacency and help build a strong legacy for the university.

The Chairperson of PUCG, His Lordship Justice Professor Emmanuel Nii Ashie Kotey, admonished the new President to have an open heart to embrace all and make God the centre of his reign.

Adding that he has the full support of the entire council of the university to deliver.

Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, a Professor of Entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science, is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon and also the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences of the same university.

Professor Owusu served in the university of Ghana, as Head of Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science, from 2008 to 2010; Vice Dean, Faculty of Science from 2010 to 2014, Dean School of Biological Sciences from August to September, 2014 and Acting Dean, School of Biological Sciences from September, 2014 to June, 2015. He served as Country Director of KANEMATSU Corporation, Tokyo, Japan (Ghana Office) from July, 2001 to December, 2004 and Country Manager, SIRUS Corporation, Tokyo, Japan from 2005 to 2009.

A scholar of international repute with proven knowledge and experience in university administration and governance, in addition to demonstrable fundraising ability, Professor Owusu has served on numerous University Boards and Committees.

Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu was recently appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to chair the Board of the Energy Commission of Ghana with a mandate to regulate and manage the development and utilization of energy resources in Ghana.
