E. P. College of Education, Amedzofe admits more females

FOR the first time in 75 years, the E. P. College of Education, Amedzofe (AMECO) has admitted more female students than males.

The 216 fresh students who took part in the 2022/23 matriculation ceremony on the campus last week Friday were made up of 113 females and 103 males.

“This is a deliberate decision to give meaning to the college’s gender policy of giving education to women through the Affirmative Action policy,” the Principal of the college, Dr Dickson Tsey, said.

He said AMECO admitted 290 students last academic year, adding that the reduction in the number this academic year was due to the government’s directive to limit admission to a specific number.

“This made the admission and selection process very rigorous,” Dr Tsey explained.

He said in an attempt to have a regional balance, AMECO admitted applicants from all 16 regions but one for the 2022/23 academic year.

Appeal

Meanwhile, the principal renewed his appeal to the government and public-spirited individuals and bodies to help the college to build a modern auditorium to accommodate the ever-increasing number of students.

He said that would also help AMECO to stop holding official programmes in the open, a situation  which did not befit the college’s status as a tertiary institution.

Dr Tsey further appealed to the government to revive work on the abandoned four-storey GETFund female hostel project of the college, which took off in 2012, to facilitate more admissions.

He announced that in line with the government’s agenda to train more preschool teachers, AMECO had introduced the four-year Early Grade Education programme, which would take off this academic year.

Subsequently, 31 students made up of seven males and 24 females had enrolled for the course, the principal added.

The fresh students will pursue four-year Bachelor of Education programmes in Early Grade, Primary Education, Junior High School Education, and French Education.
