Akyem Oda Community Nurses School appeals for classrooms, dormitories

The management of the Community Health Nurses Training School at Akyem Oda has appealed to the government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to assist in providing more classroom and dormitory blocks to cope with the increasing number of students.

The Principal of the school, Mr James Abekah-Baah, who made the appeal recently, said the appeal had become imperative as a result of the introduction of new courses by the institution which had increased students’ intake.

13th matriculation

The principal made the appeal at the school’s 13th matriculation at Oda during which 405 fresh students were formally admitted.

They comprised 220 registered Diploma in Community Health students, 130 Nurses Assistants Preventive (NAP) students and 55 Midwifery students.

New degree programme

Mr Abekah-Baah said apart from the diploma in midwifery course that was introduced by the institution in the current academic year, the school had commenced accreditation processes to roll out Bachelor of Science degree programme in Public Health Nursing in the 2021/2022 academic year.

According to the principal, apart from the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College, the Oda Community Health Nurse Training School would be the second nursing institution in the country to run the degree programme in Public Health Nursing in the country.

Rickety bus

Mr Abekah-Baah also appealed for a new bus to replace the school’s 32-year-old rickety bus which was grounded.

He said the bus, which was donated by the Japanese government in 1989, could no longer carry students for clinical lessons after its engine had been replaced seven times.

The principal advised the students to comport themselves, abide by the school regulations and study very hard in order to achieve their objectives.

Covid-19 safety protocols

He also urged them to adhere to Covid-19 safety and preventive protocols to avoid contracting the deadly disease.
