Adentan Assembly gives scholarship to students

The Adentan Municipal Assembly last Friday announced a scholarship package for 32 tertiary students within the municipality to enable them to complete the 2019/2020 academic year.

The package, which is yearly but renewable based on the needs, conduct while in school and performance of the beneficiaries, varies between GH¢1,000 and GH¢8,000 depending on the level and the course being pursued by the students.

Known as the District Level Scholarship Scheme, 2019/2020 Academic Year, under the Scholarship Secretariat, it is strictly for tuition.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries are made up of fresh, continuing and graduate students, with the fresh students receiving the lowest, while the bulk of the package went to the graduate students.

At a ceremony to announce the package, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Daniel Nii Noi Adumuah, said GH¢85,577.36 had been earmarked for the package.

He explained that 45 students applied from the municipality, out of which 32 were declared qualified to benefit from the package.

He said there were clear guidelines for one to qualify to benefit from the scheme.

Guidelines

Giving the guidelines, Mr Adumuah said the student must be brilliant but needy, must have gained admission to any of the tertiary institutions in the country, must have a student identity (ID) number and the name and the annual school fees.

“Some people applied and came for the interview, but we could not present them to the Scholarship Secretariat for consideration because they came without admission letters.

With the admission letter, the student will have to show his or her ID number because the money is paid directly to the school,” he explained.

Validity

He explained that the validity of the scholarship was subject to renewal but liable to withdrawal in the event of misconduct by the beneficiary, unsatisfactory progress of studies and failure to pass any prescribed examination.

Quoting a letter from the Scholarship Secretariat, Mr Adumuah said the onus was on him to “keep the secretariat informed about the academic progress of the students”.

He said in the past, the secretariat focused more on students studying abroad, but for the first time local students were benefiting from scholarship.

He said the selection of beneficiaries was left to the assemblies, which were on the ground to submit potential beneficiaries, saying that he was happy that Adentan was part of the process.
