196 Begin training at KNUST Jewellery Centre
Prof. Sam Afrane, the PROVOST of the College, told the matriculants to be disciplined and observe the rules and regulations once they had entered the walls of the university.
He also advised them to defy all odds and go through any challenge that might arise in the course of their three-month training.
Prof. Afrane told the matriculants to take their training seriously.
The training is being piloted in the Ashanti Region and forms part of a two-year project put together by the KJDTC.
This is in partnership with the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), sponsored by the Government of Ghana, World Bank, DANIDA, JICA, GTZ and the African Development Bank under the Skills Development Fund (SDF) to enhance the competitiveness of operators in the jewellery industry through technology and innovation.
The jewellery industry, in spite of its enormous contribution to the Ghanaian economy mostly in the area of foreign exchange earnings, employment creation and tax revenue is still seen as an infant industry.
This notwithstanding, the industry, such as many others, is faced with numerous challenges, key among which is the use of technology, which is believed to have hampered the growth of most industries in the country.
It is in this regard that the centre, in partnership with COTVET, has put together this training to offer skills to young graduates from SHS and JHS as well as local manufacturers of jewellery, otherwise known as ‘goldsmiths’ to enhance their technological capacity in the jewellery industry.
The principal of the centre, Mr Kojo Arthu, assured the matriculants that his outfit was going to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the programme would become much more attractive to serve its intended purpose.
