Why laughter is the key to a good relationship

Why laughter is the key to a good relationship

If I had to choose my absolute favorite thing about my relationship, it would be how much my partner and I laugh together.

We have those types of laughs that touch you on so many levels that you have tears streaming down your face, your cheeks hurt, and your laugh is nearly silent because at this point you’re just gasping for air. That type of laugh is one of the best feelings in the world, and I love that my partner gives me that. It’s almost as good as an orgasm (he gives me plenty of those, too, which is something else I love about our relationship).

I just couldn’t be in a relationship that didn’t contain lots of laughter. Most of our interactions end in us laughing, and then giving each other a big hug or kiss because we’re just so happy we make each other laugh like that. I know so long as we have this, we’ll make it through anything. Here is why laughter is the most important thing in a relationship.

It eases awkward sex moments

You know those times when someone accidentally knees someone in the face while switching positions, or the lube bottle makes a fart sound because it’s almost empty? Those moments are horrendous in a laugh-less relationship. They ruin the mood. In our relationship, they actually make sex more fun.

It means you connect on many levels

Having a similar sense of humor to someone means you also share other traits. When we laugh at something, that thing is triggering several parts of our minds and emotions. A laugh is something that occurs when several parts of your psyche click together. So if you and your partner laugh at the same things often, then you probably connect on tons of levels.

You’ll be happier

Laughter releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel happy. If you laugh a lot in your household, then you’ll have a happy household. Plain and simple.

It diffuses fights quickly

A well-timed quip has a way of instantly diffusing an argument. A little fight about where to park the car can escalate into a dispute that ruins the night for some couples. In couples that laugh a lot, someone can make a little joke that makes the whole issue seem silly and go away.

It makes house talk easier

Giving a note about how your partner missed a spot cleaning the counter can either cause tension, or cause a laugh. It’s all about how you put it. At the end of the day, a spot on a counter is nothing more than that, and couples who laugh a lot get that.

It’s a bond during sex droughts

Sometimes, you’ll have a sex drought. It happens to all couples. In a laugh-less relationship, these droughts can mean the end of a couple. If you don’t connect via laughter, then you desperately need an active sex life. Couples who laugh a lot manage to feel close, even when their sex life dwindles.

You look forward to seeing each other

You just look forward to seeing the person with whom you laugh the most. Laughter makes you feel light, relaxed, and at ease. If your partner makes you feel that way, then you’ll always look forward to coming home to him.

It makes a bad day better

Laughter has a way of putting our problems into perspective. It just makes a bad day better. Maybe you got into a fight with your boss but if you and your partner can riff about it, it somehow doesn’t feel as bad.

It keeps you feeling young

Laughter helps us feel young and I believe that, if your partner brings out your child-like wonder, you’ll be happy forever.

You won’t take yourselves seriously

Taking oneself too seriously is the death of any relationship. If someone becomes so fixated on money, career, status, and other things that don’t matter that much, their relationship suffers. Being able to laugh at one’s self prevents you from taking yourself too seriously.

Laughter is free

If you can’t afford to go to the movies or have fancy date nights, you know you’ll always be entertained if you and your partner laugh a lot.

You tease rather than criticize

If you and your partner have a good sense of humor together, then criticism never feels like criticism. When your partner is acting in that usual way he behaves, you can just make a joke to point it out, rather than start a fight about it.

If you have kids, it’s essential

If you plan on having children, then you better laugh a lot together. You need an amazing sense of humor to survive parenthood.

It’ll relax you

Laughter can make you feel instantly relaxed. If you and your partner laugh a lot, you won’t be on edge, and you won’t be ultra sensitive.

Life without laughter is no life

Laughter is one of the greatest feelings in the world. If you don’t have it in your relationship, then you’re just in the wrong relationship. You’ll wind up spending most of your time with your partner, so he’d better give you the gift of laughter.
