The seven commandments of beauty

Do you have lipsticks that you’ve had for 5 years? How long have you been using your mascara? Do you ever fall asleep with make up on?

These are a few questions we’re pretty sure will have a resounding “yes” as an answer because most of us gals are guilty of at least one beauty sin!

The good news is that it’s never too late to repent… so come on ladies, let’s clean up our act and make sure we stop committing these crimes against beauty!

I. Thou shall not sleep with any trace of make up on

Leaving make up on while you sleep can clog your pores and result in breakouts. Plus, you don’t want to get an eye infection from mascara dust that gets in your eyes!

II. Thou shall know expiration dates

Make up is not forever, and knowing when to toss your beauty products is key to keeping you pretty and to keep bacteria from affecting your skin. Mascara usually needs to be replaced every 2-3 months, liquid foundation and concealer can last one year max but should be thrown out if it curdles or smells off, lipstick can be kept for about 2 years, as well as eyeshadows and gloss for a year.

III. Thou shall wash make up brushes

At least once a week, let your brushes soak in warm water with baby shampoo and rub out any make up on your hand. When water runs clear, your brushes are clean. Lay them flat to dry.

IV. Thou shall get regular mani-pedis

A regular cleaning by a professional every two weeks will keep your fingernails looking neat. There are home services for those who have “no time” and inexpensive services in mid-priced salons for those on a budget.

V. Thou shall stop hoarding

Unless you are a professional make up artist, having an excessive amount of make up is pretty wasteful as you won’t be using them every single day. Invest in two “sets” of make up. One for everyday use and one for special occasions and, once in a while, allow yourself a new tube of lipstick to change it up.

VI. Thou shall moisturise

No matter how young you think you look, your skin is changing and aging daily. Whether your skin is dry, oily or combination, there’s a moisturiser for every type so no excuses!

VII. Thou shall stop shampooing everyday

Unless your scalp is super oily, daily shampoos will zap out any oil you have in your hair, and it badly needs these natural oils to stay healthy. Every other day is a better option and, in between, you can use a dry shampoo or just wet it while under the shower while skipping the suds.
