The event which would be held at the Kempiski Hotel in Accra on Saturday, July 2, 2016, would see the graduates displaying on stage their latest collections and designs similar to the fashion shows at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

During the launch, some graduates exhibited designs that would be showcased later at the Graduates Fashion Show.

Radford University is the premier university to offer a degree course in fashion-design.

The RUC has made fashion-design an integral part of its curricula. It has produced a number graduates who are making it big on the international market. For instance, international news network CNN, featured Papa Oppong, the best fashion design graduate of the RUC last year. He is currently in the United States mounting various exhibitions.

“He (Papa Oppong) has been named as one of the top 15 African fashion designers to watch. Two other graduates from the university are in Hollywood and the University of New York,” the Chairman of the RUC, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, said at the launch of the Graduate Fashion Show.

According to him, the fashion industry is very lucrative, and that it is one area through which the graduates could be assisted to set up their own businesses after school.

Nana Sarpong said it was the resolve of the institution to produce entrepreneurs who would set up their own businesses rather than rely on government for jobs.

He called on government to promote and support the fashion industry by assisting young people to secure loans to establish their businesses, adding that those already into fashion and design should be assisted to upgrade their skills through retraining and knowledge acquisition.

“I am appealing to the government to look at the fashion industry, training and the institutions that are undertaking such programmes to encourage the students,” he said.
