Students who registered in centres outside the regions they reside can ask others to verify whether their names have been captured in the voters register during the 10-day exhibition of the biometric voters register.The exercise starts from this Saturday, September 1 to 10.
However, in case of mistakes or omissions in the registration, those people cannot effect the corrections on their behalf.
The Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Christian Owusu Parry, said this in a telephone interview.
He explained that since it was illegal for anyone to carry another persons voter’s ID card, affected students could give their voter’s ID numbers to their friends to help the EC officials to locate their names on the register.
He, however, encouraged such students to make an effort to visit their registration centres, to ensure that their names, age and other relevant information had been properly recorded in the register.
Mr Parry said the 10-day exhibition of the biometric voters register would not be extended; therefore, it was important for everybody to take advantage during the period to check their names.
When asked whether students could transfer their votes during the exhibition, he answered in the negative, adding that “there will not be transfer of names from one registration centre to the other because the commission has to finish compiling the register and certify that there are no errors before that can be done”.
The EC communications director explained that the exhibition of the biometric register had become necessary because the commission was required by law to display the register anytime a new register was compiled or revised.
He added that it was also to clean the register of errors such as wrong spelling of names, wrong pictures, inaccurate age and any other
particulars that were wrongly recorded during the registration.
A lot of students were in school during the registration exercise. As a result, they registered in centres in or around their schools.
