The Tema Metropolitan Education Directorate has presented awards to 11 students who excelled in its maiden reading competition.
The winners comprised pupils from Kindergarten One to Junior High School Three. They received prizes such as books and school bags and were presented with their prizes during the 59th Independence Day parade held at the Tema Sports Stadium.
The Education Directorate introduced the competition this year to promote reading among the pupils.
The Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs Veronica Adzato-Ntem, said the directorate had noticed the poor reading habits of pupils and students in many schools in the metropolis.
That, she said, did not only affect performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination but also in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
She said to rekindle the habit of reading, the directorate had introduced the reading contest and that under the project, pupils in all public schools would be encouraged to read their class reading books in addition to supplementary story books.
She called on businesses in Tema to take keen interest in promoting education in order to improve academic performance and results from the WASSCE.
For the maiden edition, the students read the following books: JHS Three- Changing Destinies, JHS Two-Shadow of Shame, JHS One-In Search of the Rainbow, Primary Six- Making the Parade, Primary Five- Kwame Nkrumah, Primary Four- Invincible Eye, Primary Three-One Good Turn, Primary Two-The Big Rock, Primary One- The Big Yellow House, KG Two-Wake Up, KG One- Hello.
The competition was sponsored by Unilever Ghana Limited, African Kart, and Lantern Publications.
