Teenage girls sensitised to menstrual hygiene

The Touching Lives of Girls Foundation (TLGF) and the Becca Hearts Foundation sensitized adolescent girls to the essence of good personal hygiene during menstruation. The girls were pupils from St Martin de Porres, Emmanuel Presby School and Star of the Sea Roman Catholic School.

A gynaecologist from the Zoe Royal Hospital and Fertility Care, Dr Emmanuel Fiawoo, took the girls through the functions of the female reproductive system and entreated adults to take responsibility for teaching adolescent girls about how to keep themselves clean to avoid infections during their menstruation.

‘’We want them to know that the girls are more prone to contracting infections during their menstruation, so we should all take responsibility for assisting them to prevent it,’’ Dr Fiawoo said. Speaking with the Junior Graphic in an interview, the President of TLGF, Nana Ama Adutwumwaa, expressed concern about the inadequate information on menstrual hygiene.

She said, “In our bid to empower the girl child, we have to start from the basics, which is good personal hygiene, and that will in turn boost the confidence and self-esteem of the girls.”

Additionally, she said some girls did not go to school during menstruation because they lacked the fundamental knowledge on how to take care of themselves, explaining that it was as a result of societal silence on the issue.

“Something as significant as women’s menstrual hygiene should not be buried under the carpet, this is what has also resulted in the improper disposal of sanitary pads,” she added.

The girls had the opportunity to ask questions about issues on menstruation that they needed clarification on.
