Teen Chat: Kill the Maths phobia

Mathematics is an old subject which ancient Egyptians used thousands of years ago. It involves counting, addition, subtraction, etc. of numbers.  Maths is often a no go area for most students, especially girls. They perceive it as a difficult subject but this is not true.

There is, therefore, the need to correct this erroneous belief. I believe Maths is one of the easiest subjects in which students can easily get an ‘A’ only if they work at it.

But first all students have to overcome their  fear for Maths and believe  that they would be able to  perform well in the subject.

Students are required to learn basic principles in Maths to enable them to pass the subject.

I think there should be a change of attitude towards the subject.

Students should know that they would possibly find each subject difficult if they tune their minds to believe that it is difficult just as they are doing  with Maths.

The trick I believe is constant practice because I know that, that  will surely make students perfect. All students should make it a point to solve a few problems a day and work out more examples to grasp that topic.

As students work out more examples, they will realise Maths is not as difficult as they think after all.  The important thing is for students to  practice   all the topics  taught in school.

Never say “I don’t understand,” “I will never understand it,” because when you do that, no matter what the teachers do, you will never understand the topic since your mind is already made up. This explains the power in whatever we say.

However, if we cultivate the “I can do spirit” even if the going gets tough, we would do everything within our means to solve that particular problem.

It is important to develop an interest for the subject. Loving a subject makes you yearn to perform well in it and your interest will build up each day  as you realise you begin to solve the questions by yourself and score good grades in the subject..

Look for help when you encounter difficulties. Don’t feel shy to approach your mates, seniors, or teachers for help when you are not clear with certain  topics or exercises.

If all students would believe that there is nothing which is possible in this world without God it would be very helpful to them. Always seek the face of God to help you through.

My fellow students, add value to your life, subtract failure, multiply success, divide discouragement and success will finally be yours.
