The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) has organised an educational programme for students of the Church of Christ Senior High School at Ejisu on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The programme was to educate the students on the goals and how they could contribute to their attainment. It was also to bring the activities of the centre closer to the people.
It was organised in conjunction with non-governmental organisations such as the Young People We Care, Global Shapers Community and the Abibimman Foundation.
Addressing the students, the National Information Officer of UNIC, Mrs Cynthia Prah said there was the need for the people to own the goals and play an active part in achieving them.
She said the SDGs were meant for the whole world, particularly the developing ones to help improve on the living conditions of all.
According to her, for the goals to be achieved, it was for all societies to own them and work in unity to achieve them.
She said in all, 17 goals were adopted but have been summarised into five areas for easy understanding.
Mrs Prah mentioned the five areas as the people, planet, peace, prosperity and partnership.
She was impressed with the participation of the people in the programme and was particularly pleased with the interest shown by the schools as many of the students were unaware of the SDGs and asked many questions for more clarification.
“Some schools are even requesting that we extend the programme to their respective schools to enable their students to also benefit from it,” she stated.
Some of the communities and schools visited by the team included the Tamale Senior High School and the Boakurugu community in the Sagnarogo District of the Northern Region, the Kumasi Senior High and Technical School (KSTS) and the Ejisu market, as well as a courtesy call on the chiefs and people of Agric Nzema in the Kumasi Metropolis.
