Well, guess what, the holidays are finally here so have all the fun you have been dreaming about but don’t throw caution to the wind.

Whatever you do, make sure you stay safe to be able to enjoy the next academic year in one piece.

Here are some tips to remember while you have all the fun in the world.

Don’t talk to people you don’t know

Most of you will be attending vacation classes and since it is not a normal class, your parents might not drop you off early in the morning in order for you to catch a few more hours of sleep. This means that you will be going to vacation classes by yourself.

As you walk alone to classes, make sure you don’t stop to talk to strangers on your way. You also don’t have to stop to play because you need to get there in time since your parents are paying for the class so concentrate and head straight home after class.

Walk in groups but don’t be influenced negatively

During holiday classes, it is fun and safe to walk with friends to and from school. But don’t let your friends lure you into doing anything that you have not planned to do. For instance, on your way to classes, don’t let your friends tempt you into entering an adult’s car for a ride to school. Even if you have to board a vehicle, always be in public transport such as ‘trotro’ or buses instead of travelling in taxis.

Don’t go near the gas stove

A lot of people have been burnt because the gas stove they were using was faulty so if you know you don’t know how to use the gas stove, don’t go near it. Going near the gas stove when you have not been asked to could result in serious burns.

Don’t eat anyhow, avoid cholera

I know a lot of you will be having meals in town during the holidays. Make sure you eat healthily. Don’t just eat anything. If you have to buy food, make sure you are buying from a clean environment. Avoid buying from vendors in environments with a lot of flies. Make sure any cooked food you buy is hot and not cold in order to prevent cholera.

Don’t play in the rain

The rainy season is here with us and since a lot of roads are under construction, don’t attempt to play in the rain because you never know which stagnant water is actually a ditch and not just a collection of rain water in order not to get drowned. You could also catch a cold or get an infection which will not allow you to make the most of your holidays.

This, notwithstanding, the essence of the holidays is to relax, have fun, make new friends and learn new things. So take advantage of the opportunities available to you and be sure to document all your experiences in order that you can share with your friends when you go back to school to begin the new academic year.
