The Staward School in Accra has held its ninth graduation ceremony, with 50 junior high school students graduating.
Speaking at the event, the Programmes Manager of the school, Mr Benjamin Oduro, said since this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) wasn’t easy for the candidates because of the cancellation of five papers; parents should encourage their children to be serious with their academic work.
The Head of Sports at TV Africa, Mr Joe Lartey Jnr, appealed to the Ministry of Education to investigate the leakage of this year’s BECE questions and punish the culprits to serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of such crimes.
Mr Lartey, who is a writer of children’s books and a poet, also called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take a critical look at poems and rhymes at the basic level of education.
“Poetry shapes the mind and perception of children from a very early age in life, but for the past 50 years our poems and rhymes have not been revised,” he observed.
The children put up wonderful performances such as recitals/Abacus display, Cadet drills, modelling and drama.
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Linda Adadevor, advised the students never to forget the school’s motto: “Let your light shine and shine wherever you find yourself.”
Each graduating student was presented with a Bible and Rosary. Mrs Adadevor added: “Silver and gold have I none but I give you the word of God and a Rosary to accompany you.”
