It was all joy for the staff and students of St. Rose’s Girls Junior High School in Akwatia when the school emerged winners of the 2015/16 academic year sporting activities.
The school won in both the Boys and Girls under 12 and 15 categories and was presented with a trophy and certificate from the Akwatia Zone A sports organising executives.
The sporting events included soccer, handball, volleyball and netball which were competed for by both public and private basic schools in the zone.
At the end of the competition, the school took the first position in the Under 15 Girls soccer by beating Akwatia Presby JHS by a lone goal.
In his congratulatory message to the gallant players of the school team, the Denkyembour District Sports Coordinator, Mr Eric Awadzi, encouraged both students and teachers to maintain their status quo in sports development in the school as well as in the district.
The Headmistress of the school, Madam Comfort Elavanyo Agorsor, applauded the effort put in by both teachers and students for winning the double.
In another development, the school represented by Miss Precious Ewli, Miss Gifty Agbo, all JHS 3 students, emerged winners in a debate which was organised by the Denkyembour District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education.
The topic for the debate was: ‘’It is the responsibility of the government to clean up the environment rather than the individual”.
Speaking against the motion, the school beat their Akwatia Liberty Assemblies of God Preparatory School on 8.50 to 6.00 score out of 10 points. Among the schools present to witness the event were Akwatia Methodist JHS and Akwatia Pentecost Preparatory School.
Mr Osman Seidu, the District Civic Education Officer and Mr Geoffrey Korku Ganyovi, the Headteacher of Akwatia Liberty Assemblies of God Preparatory School and chairman for the occasion advised all and sundry to take environmental and sanitation issues seriously.
