Serwaa Kesse SHS wins inter-school debate

The Serwaa Kesse Girls’ Senior High School at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region has won this year’s Independence Day Inter-SHS Debate held at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Accra.

The keenly contested event, which was the 19th edition, saw Serwaa Kesse SHS, which represented the northern sector, defeating Okuapeman SHS from Akropong in the Eastern Region, which represented the southern sector by only three points.

In the final scores, Serwaa Kesse scored 148 marks over 200 while Okuapeman SHS scored 145 marks over 200.

For emerging tops, Serwaa Kesse SHS was presented with a 43-inch television and cash while each of the contestants was presented with a certificate and a laptop.

The Okuapemn SHS also had a 43-inch television and a cash prize with each of the contesting students receiving a certificate and a laptop.

The topic for debate was: “Investing in the youth-The sole responsibility of the government”.

Serwaa Kesse SHS, represented by Jacqueline Osei and Christiana Korankye, spoke against the motion while Okuapeman, represented by Dennis Klorlali Sokpe and Geraudi Ahovey, spoke for the motion.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, commended the students for their excellent delivery in arguing for and against the motion.

Their deliveries, she said, showed that the country’s education system was not on the downward trend, as being perceived by some people.
