The Director of the Hydrometeorological Disasters of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mrs Sara A. Adireku, who gave the advice in an interview with the Junior Graphic, said schools which were located in flood-prone areas, should not ask students to go home immediately it rained.

Mrs Adireku explained that if children were made to go home during such dangerous weather conditions, the likelihood of some of them being trapped in gutters and drains or being harmed by a falling tree, electric cable or wall was high.

During such periods, Mrs Adireku advised school authorities to call the operational numbers of NADMO for the support of the rescue and evacuation teams to assist the children to safer grounds.

Mrs Adireku cautioned school authorities to ensure that all electrical gadgets were switched off during such times.

She also said it was important for parents and guardians to provide their mobile phone numbers to the teachers of their children and wards so that when there was any emergency they could be contacted.

The director asked parents to ensure that they provided their children with raincoats, umbrellas, boots and sweaters so that their wards could use them whenever it rained since that would offer them protection from the rain.

Mrs Adireku told children not to cross gutters or walk on the shoulders of gutters during and after any rainfall because they could easily slip and fall in them or even drown in the process.

She further advised children to look for a safe location (to wait) whenever they were on their way home and it began to rain.

Mrs Adireku said the NADMO operational numbers which children and the public could call for help in case of emergencies were 0302982531 and 0299350030.
