Students of NATECO Senior High School and Don Bosco Senior High School survived a gruelling marathon course to emerge victors of the inaugural Road Baton Relay.
The NATECO team overcame a fierce competition from Don Bosco and the Swedru Business School to claim the Boys 30-kilometre six-person team relay.
In the female event, the Don Bosco team beat Labone Senior High School and the Conquerors Academy of Business Studies to win the 18-kilometre marathon.
However, both teams were only named victors when the Action Progressive Institute team was disqualified after they had finished tops of the Boys and Girls divisions.
The organisers of the marathon, DreamLand Sports Plus, explained that Action Progressive Institute used several unqualified runners, which gave them an unfair advantage in the competition.
The starting point of the boys race was at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company Limited on the Spintex Road through the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange then through Osu to the Accra Sports Stadium, where the girls 18-km race began.
The students later raced through the High Street to Korle Bu through Chorkor, Dansoman Exhibition Roundabout, Dansoman Highway, Sakaman Junction and ended at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex.
For their efforts, the six students from NATECO were awarded a four-year scholarship by Blue Crest College to study Business Administration while the winners from Don Bosco were awarded a scholarship to study Fashion Designing as well as Athletics Training.
All the competitors received certificates of participation as well as products and souvenirs from the sponsors - Peak Milk, Berlin Sports, Indomie, Top Kings Chocolate and McVities.
