My experience: Oh no, what a camp! (1)

It started when I was a participant of a spot camp towards a regional competition on behalf of my school. I was a sprinter. It was a two day-week intensive training programme.

At first, I wasn’t too excited about it, because no one in my school was going to the camp and all my seniors had ever taken part in the programme. I knew I wouldn’t have much fun unless I made new friends.

I didn’t want to go but my parents suggested I went to the camp and meet people for a change. Most of the students I met there were just too noisy and outgoing for my liking. So by the end of the first week, I hadn’t found anyone that I would want to hand out with.

With only three days left for the camp to come to a close we had a forum for students to express their views about how the programme went and suggest ways of making it better.

About 15 minutes into the programme, a girl came in and sat at a table about 20 feet from me. I glanced at her and she glanced back with a smile. She was really beautiful and I thought to myself, if I could only find a girl that was that pretty who like me.....

For the rest of the meeting, most of my attention was on her. The forum finally came to a close and I decided to talk to her. I did something I had never done before. I introduced myself and said ‘You must be Sena ‘. She had a name tag which indicated her group- she played tennis.

Smiling, she said, ’ Yes, I wonder how you figured that out’. Right away I noticed her smile and wanted to talk to her even more.

All students from the camp went to a funfair which I learnt was organised annually during the camp. I went to the assembly hall where the programme was taking place and she ended up next to me, which made me very glad, as if, meeting each other was by fate.

We began talking about little things then a group from a school began to do a rap song I liked. She said that she liked it too as she began to sway her body here and there. We started to talk casually about so many other things.

It was evening and I had been waiting to see the entire compound of the school, so I suggested we walk around to see more of our camp.

One by one, people began to leave finally everyone left the fair except Sena and I. I was so happy that we would finally get to talk alone. We were both tired of standing after our long walk and ended up in one of the classrooms. It was the greatest time I’ve ever had.

Later, Sena told me that if I wasn’t younger than her (oh yeah she was 17, a year older than me at the time but my birthday was in a couple of days and if she didn’t have a boyfriend, she would go out with me.

I thought that was great and I wasn’t too discourage by her having a boyfriend, because she told me how they were having problems. It looked like she was so much experience in a boy-girl relationship and I wondered where it came from.

That night went very well and we talked about many things until about 1a.m. when we finally went to sleep. We decided to meet again the next day because we had no training session.

I woke up the next day and went for breakfast; she came to sit beside me. I looked at her and she looked and she looked at me back, in fact straight in my eyes, then turned her head and took a deep breath. ‘Don’t do that ‘, she said, ‘It gives me butterflies.’ I sat and looked at her again, but she looked away.
