My background didn’t hold me back – Shirley Tony Kum recounts SHS memories

The Corporate Communications Manager for Vivo Energy Ghana, Mrs. Shirley Tony Kum, has shared fond memories of her early development in Senior High School (SHS).

Being a product of Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School, she indicated that coming from a difficult home did not deter her from striving for excellence in school.

In an interview with Rev Erskine of the Yleaderboard Series hosted on Y107.9 FM’s “Myd Morning Radio Show,” she said, “I’m a proud product of Mfamtsiman Girls Senior High School. I wasn’t really vibrant but I must say I was the book type because I knew where I was coming from. When I got to the school I told myself I was the firstborn and didn’t come here to joke.”

“I virtually went to a school with an empty chop box and I could count the items inside. I literally didn’t have it", she said hysterically.

Mrs. Kum recounted how she was able to register for her final exams when all hope seemed to have been lost as she expressed gratitude to her colleague who came through for her.

“Even at the time when I was writing my SSSCE, the money for registration was a problem so it was my own colleague who assisted and I refunded her when my parents later gave me the money,” she noted.

According to her, in the midst of all the uncertainties and despair, she remained focused and steady with her books

“Though I love expeditions and other activities my background didn’t give me that chance to open up. So I formed my friendship and relationship based on where I’m coming from and that has been my style,” she added.
