The Headmistress of the St. Mary’s Senior High School, Ms Doris Bramson, has appealed to the government to lift the ban on the recruitment of teachers to address the shortfall.
In addition, she said, more accommodation should be provided on campus to cater for housemasters and housemistresses.
That, she said, would enhance the effective running of the schools and boost the enforcement of discipline, proper grooming and the right moral upbringing of students.
“It will also ensure a better quality of life for outstretched multitasking mistresses who take on extra responsibilities after school as a mother, wife and a counsellor,” she said.
Ms Bramson made the appeal during the school’s 66th Speech and Prize-giving Day in Accra, on the theme, “The Educated Girl: Attitudes, Values and Challenges.”
According to the headmistress, the school which was established in 1950 has a current student population of 850, 40 teaching and 48 non-teaching staff.
Touching on the achievements of the school, Ms Bramson said out of 246 candidates the school registered for the West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for 2014/2015 academic year, 127 passed in all eight subjects, 78 passed in seven subjects, 25 passed in six subjects, 12 passed in five subjects and four passed in four subjects.
The Managing Partner of Gravel and Cross, Ms Vivien Lamptey, said if the country was to move forward the issue of young women’s unemployment should be addressed.
“The government should ensure girls and young women are able to participate actively, equally and effectively with boys and young men at all levels of social, educational, economic, political, cultural, civil life, leadership as well as scientific endeavours,” she stated.
For her part, the School Prefect of St. Mary’s Senior High School, Miss Josephine Atorku Degbe, said she and her prefectorial team during her tenure of office made progress in the area of discipline.
“The rampant indisciplined behaviour of students has reduced significantly leading to the reduction in the cases of sittings by the disciplinary committee,” she said.
In all, about 20 students who distinguished themselves in various fields were awarded with prizes.
