Letters: Eat heathily

Dear Editor, I would like to highlight certain habits which I believe if children adopt, will help their bodies fight diseases, especially COVID-19.

One of these is eating nutritious foods. Nutritious foods are naturally rich in vitamins and minerals. Many of our Ghanaian dishes are nutritious and that is why it is important for us to eat them.

Good nutrition, as I have learnt in school, helps improve our well-being, helps the body fight off diseases and illnesses and enables one to recover quickly from injury.
Aside from these, healthy eating provides children with a strong and healthy mind which makes learning so easy and interesting for

them. A healthy mind enables children to memorise things quickly. Such a child is, therefore, smarter and more determined.
Eating fruits and vegetables is one of the ways of eating well because fruits and vegetables provide the body with vitamins which help boost the immune system. Examples of these are mangoes, pineapples, oranges, carrots, etc.

As we have heard from various health personnel who have appeared on television programmes since the outbreak of the virus, a strong immune system is one of the ways of fighting the virus so let us take these seriously.

This means that we have to stop eating junk foods such as pizza, noodles and fried rice because although these foods are tasty, they don't have enough nutrients  to help us. They can cause obesity and other health problems. These foods can be eaten once in a while.

While eating healthily, we must not forget to exercise regularly. Schools have been closed down as a result of COVID-19 and so most of us are at home and would spend a greater part of our time sitting behind  television sets watching our favourite programmes and playing video games.

The long hours of sitting down with no or less exercise is not good for us.  Exercising regularly helps control weight and helps increase energy levels. Exercises such as brisk walking, jogging and biking make the muscles stronger. They keep our hearts, lungs and circulatory system healthy and improve overall fitness.
