The third edition of the National Junior Graphic Fan Club Spelling Competition began in Accra last Tuesday.
The schools that set the pace for the competition this year in Group One, Accra were the Falsyd Foundation School, Achimota; Redeemer Preparatory School, Dzorwulu; Immaculate Heart R/C Basic School, Christian Village, and Trinity Academy, Dome Pillar ‘2’.
At the end of the competition, Falsyd Foundation School won with 65 points and thus move on to the next stage of the competition.
The competition, which is being organised by the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), is sponsored by ECOBANK, MoneyGram, Ghana Book Trust, Magic Malt and the Ghana Book Publishers Association.
At the launch, the Strategy Manager of GCGL, Mr John Tagoe, who represented the Managing Director, Mr Ken Ashigbey, said it was important for children to build their glossary by mastering the words in the dictionary in order to become great men and women in the future.
He supported the quest by the Junior Graphic and ECOBANK to organise the spelling competition since it would help the country realise the mission of developing its human talents.
The acting Editor of the Junior Graphic, Mr Vance Azu, said spelling competitions helped students to improve on their vocabulary and comprehension.
According to Mr Azu, the goal of the Junior Graphic is to enable every student to spell, read and write well.
“Highlighting on the activities for the competition, Mr Azu stated that the competition would take place across the country and the first phase (which is the preliminary or group stage) would entail fan clubs in every region contesting among themselves so that “the winner will then qualify to the next level of the competition.”
The next phase, he said, would be the knock-out phase where the winners and first runners-up would qualify to participate in the final stage.
The Branch Manager of ECOBANK, McCarthy Hill Division, Mr Mark Adjei, encouraged the students to cultivate the habit of saving.
He said it was important for children to start saving rather than spending extravagantly.
Group Two, Accra
Meanwhile, Akosua Aninakwa reports that a new entrant to the Junior Graphic Fan Club Competition, the Gbawe International Montessori School in Accra, justified its inclusion in the ongoing Junior Graphic Fan Club Spelling Competition by beating two other contenders in the Group Two contest.
With this win, Gbawe International Montessori School has qualified for the next stage of the competition.
The winning school was represented by Caleb Baidoo, Delphina Boye and Michael Odame, with Nathaniel Mensah Agbovi, Aisha Ali and Cosmos Kweku Appiah representing the Silent Star Academy. Josephine Nyampong, Nana Ama Yeboah and Afua Frimpong represented the Acropolis Schools.
In Tema, seven fan club schools participated in the competition, which the Prince of Peace Presbyterian School won with 34 points. It has thus qualified for the next stage of the competition.
St Mary’s International School, Ashaiman, placed second; Be-Light International School came third while Christian Vertical Centre took the fourth position.
The rest were Leonardo Junior High School, Tema Newtown, fifth; Star Basic JHS, Tema, sixth and Ashridge International Montessori School, Tema, which placed seventh.
