Instil traditional values in children

The acting Director of the Social Welfare Department, Mr Daniel Nonah, has advised families to go back to their roots and instill in children the good traditional values which have held the country together for so many years.

He said such values, which include respect for the elderly, honesty and truthfulness would ensure that children grew up into responsible adults who would impact society positively through their actions, behaviours and attitudes.

Mr Nonah was speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the International Day of the Family which falls on May 15 every year.

The international day of the family provides an opportunity to create awareness of issues affecting families in society.

According to Mr Nonah, the external family system in the country was gradually breaking down due to economic hardships which had forced many to leave their families in the villages and travelled to the cities to look for jobs.

He said families need to continue to uphold good traditional values which trained members to take care of their homes and also address the issues of domestic violence.

During the celebration, there were cultural displays and a drama performed by the children from the Osu Children’s Home in Accra.
